Week 3 - Excavations!

This week, we finished up our 2 x 2 meter units, found several features, and then opened up more area at CBHC and a unit at KCV. By weeks end we had identified over 60 features including numerous pits and likely part of one or more houses.

Monday we finished up the first level of the first set of units at Crescent Bay. Unit 17-01 had two pits and two posts in it (you can see the dark semi-circles coming out of the walls on the left (south side) and right (north side) of the unit.

CBHC Unit 17-03 also had two pit features in it - the dark stains stand out nicely in this photo
These pottery sheds came from the feature in the image above (the upper dark circle)

After the day was done some of us went up to KCV to locate where we want to place our units. We used a combination of high and low tech for this one - even with GPS - TDS - and all sorts of other acronym technology, it's hard to beat a transit's compass

Tuesday, we went up to KCV and started to dig the unit we located the previous evening. 12 archaeologists can make quick work of a plow zone --- even if it is scorching hot and in the direct sun.

Wednesday we split up the crew - sending part to Crescent Bay and  part to KCV. The Crescent Bay crew chunked out some more area between the first three units. The students at KCV started to clean up the big unit.

However, we did get some rain

By the end of the week, we had more than 50 sq meters of new units opened and cleaned with more than 60 new features identified between the two sites
