Week 1
We started off the week by setting up camp at the beautiful Crescent Bay Hunt Club
Learning the Basics - Pacing, an important skill, is harder than you'd think. Students learn to pace 10 meters for mapping and survey
Shovel testing demonstration by our fearless leader - shovel test dug and determining now we're determining soil color
Thursday and Friday we were putting those pacing skills to work and adding some new ones - We went up to Crescent Bay and shovel tested the north field - the students did a great job - we found a lot of different types of artifacts. Because of all their hard work, we can now place our excavation units next week in the best place possible.
First shovel tests of all five transects
One more done --- time to back fill
Note taking and paperwork
Screening to find the smaller artifacts
Kat checks artifacts
Starting a new shovel test
Looks like we found something
Almost done - getting near the north end of the field
That B-horizon soil was hard to screen but they got through it
